Dogs In History
The Rescue Dog
Riley, a golden retriever member of FEMA's Pennsylvania Task Force 1, is one of 300 dogs that were enlisted to search for survivors at the World Trade Center after the 9/11 attacks.
According to the American Kennel Club, Riley helped to locate the bodies of several firefighters. Often times he was sent without a handler to search particularly hard to reach places. Despite a long and tough search, Riley never gave up on looking for the living.
Riley also gave hope and comfort to those who were searching as well. He passed away in 2010 at 13 after many years of service.
